Summary:Already at the time of the Habsburg Monarchy the Protestant, Jewish, Orthodox and Muslim Soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian army enjoyed special rights and privileges of religious assistance.Acomplex system of multireligious military chaplaincy existed in the Habsburg Empire. Also the Armed Forces of the Second Austrian Republic have regulations in place for religious assistance tominority faiths, albeit under radically different circumstances. This article analyses the development of military chaplaincy in Austria from the Habsburg period to the present. It shows that in some cases practices of the past were more progressive than todayns regulations. The article asks to what extent presentday regulations of military chaplaincy in Austria meet the requirements of the right to free religious practice of professional soldiers and recruits.
