Description
Summary:My main goal in this paper is to provide an overall introduction to the life and the legacy of the late Jean Bethke Elshtain (1941-2013). Building on a personal dialogue started in the late 1990s, I shall strengthen the claim that following the traces and the trajectories of the modern self can serve as a hermeneutical key for highlighting and interpreting some of the major contributions of her work. Such an approach offers the possibility of examining her understanding of the origins, the trajectory and the possibilities of the modern self, as well as offering a lens to look into the ways in which she dealt with crucial and timely issues such as gender, democracy, civic engagement, justice, just war and finally sovereignty in a shrinking globalising world. My study is not an in-depth assessment of such themes, but rather an invitation for further engagement, particularly in post-totalitarian transitional spaces like Romania and Eastern Europe more generally.
