Description
Summary:Traditionally, Greek schools provide an obligatory course of denominational religious education related to the construction of Greek identity, of which the Orthodox religion is an integral part. From 2003, however, the Greek state set out to construct European citizenship on a more solid basis through a renewal of its didactic material. This article analyses the content of school manuals for religious instruction in Greece, with a view to studying the impact of changes in a religious education now integrated into citizenship education. It is found that these changes, encouraged by the European educational institutions, have effects on the construction of school discourse and on how religious knowledge is perceived by social actors.
