Description
Summary:The paper examines the prehistory and the making of the dogmatic constitution Dei Verbum at the Second Vatican Council, with a special regard to the problem of vernacular translation of the original text of the Bible. Despite some wavering on the part of the Catholic hierarchy, the Council represents a watershed by having made clear that the Bible is a book for all faithful, not just the property of a few specialists or authorities. Its vulgarization, both in terms of personal reading by the faithful and diffusion of the results of scholarly approaches, remains of utmost importance and should not be depreciated.
