Description
Summary:In his De servo arbitrio Luther argues that there is no freedom with respect to human will and decision because these are completely determined by divine providence. In his catechisms he nonetheless admonishes everyone to engage actively in the practices of the Christian life. The question is how these two concepts are compatible with each other. The essay describes how Luther understands Christian life. To recognise and accept that God is sovereign over the whole world and one's own life liberates the will from being slave to its own quaerere quae sua sunt (seeking the things of self). This liberation means selfdetermination in unity with the divine will and the possibility to act freely and responsibly toward oneself and fellow humans.
