Description
Summary:When The Baltimore Sun, a major metropolitan daily newspaper, equated St. Ignatius Loyola to Adolf Hitler and stated that both men functioned with "utter ruthlessness and brutality," Baltimore Archbishop Michael "Iron Mike" Curley decided he was not going to tolerate the insult to the patron saint of his archdiocese. Curley and his newspaper, The Baltimore Catholic Review, launched a public and prolonged battle to compel The Sun to retract its insult and apologize. Fearing that its First Amendment rights to free expression would be compromised, The Sun and its famous editor H.L. Mencken refused. The resulting editorial warfare and public boycott embroiled the archdiocese of Baltimore in controversy and threatened The Sun's existence. This became one of the most spirited battles undertaken by any Catholic newspaper in the history of the American Catholic press.
