| Summary: | This paper on Ibo resistance to the imposition of British colonial power in Nigeria begins with a discussion of a few examples of Ibo resistance prior to the scramble for Africa among European powers in the second half of the nineteenth century. The Ibo had trade dealings with the British for three centuries before the scramble, and the dimensions of African resistance are revealed in these dealings with Europeans. Another example is the hostile relationship between the Ibo and European missionaries. These examples show that resistance occurred long before the scramble; it took both violent and nonviolent forms; and the initial conflicts revolved around trade, or the control of resources. During the colonial era, three types of resistance can be distinguished: 1) some communities were unwilling to negotiate with the British and responded, from the beginning, with arms against the British encroachment; 2) other communities negotiated with the British, hoping to hold them off as long as possible, and resorted to armed resistance when that was no longer possible; 3) some communities tried to avoid armed encounters, relying on magic and divine help, i.e. oracles.
