| Summary: | The article is about the 1968 temple-entry crisis on the Jaffna Peninsula, the territorial and cultural centre of the majority of Sri Lankan Tamils. After seeking to uncover the complex patterns of social and economic change that had brought Jaffna's castes to the point of internecine war by the late 1960s, the article shows that Jaffna's religious reform movement had contradictory implications for the peninsula's social system: it played into the hands of conservative Vellalar interests, at the same time it also provided an ideological basis for untouchable temple entry.
