Summary:The article aims at analyzing briefly the origin and growth of the Darul Islam movement with emphasis on the life of the leader of the rebellion (Sukarmadji Maridjan Kartosuwiryo), his ideology for establishing an Islamic theocratic state and a discussion on some of the problems he encountered in his effort to achieve his objective. His activities within the Sarekat Islam (which became Partai Sarekat Islam Indonesia - PSII - in 1930). His collaboration with the Japanese during their occupation of Indonesia. His execution in 1962 after the failure of the Darul Islam rebellion
