| Summary: | The article briefly outlines the past and the potential involvement of the mainline Protestant churches in Middle East issues. Included are comments on the evangelicals and the fundamentalists. As is argued, because of the onus of history with regard to all three faith communities in the Middle East, Western Christians cannot assume the role of impartial mediators in the disputes between faith communities in the region. In reality, Western Christianity continues to be a part of the problem. The concluding remarks point to strategies, by which American Christians can bring credibility to their own witness by challenging the policies of the own government. Attention is drawn to the so-called foreign aid program of the American government, that provides more aid to Israel than to 49 African countries. (DÜI-Asd) |
