Description
Summary:The former Mamprusi kingdom in north-eastern Ghana is one of a set of loosely centralised kingdoms in the savanna region of the Volta river system. According to the author, the historical decay of the Mamprusi kingdom is a complex process, involving changing balance of power during this century between a distant central government (be it colonial or independent) and the Mamprusi kingdom. The author discusses witchcraft in pre-colonial Mamprusi kingdom, new Mamprusi conceptions of witchcraft and how idealised norms of Mamprusi gender relations are being threatened by changes in national economic and political conditions.
