Description
Summary:This article is aimed at the revision of the neglected role of the League of Nations in the Middle Bast. The thematic focus lies on the influence of politics on religious communities. After the end of the Ottoman Empire (1918) the conquered former Arab provinces in the Middle Bast came under the international mandate system of the League of Nations. This unique new polity had a twofold impact on all religious communities in the mandated territories. Firstly, due to secular state administration religious leaders had to accept the separation of their spiritual and temporal powers. And secondly, the mandate regime changed the religious law of the Ottoman-Islamic society by introducing the principle of religious freedom and protection of religious, racial and linguistic minorities under international law. This new legal order of religious plurality, based on the secular concept of civil equality, repealed finally the Ottoman millet-system, although its acceptance on the religious-social level did not progress smoothly and ultimately did not succeed to date.
