| Summary: | After a brief biographical profile of Angelo De Gubernatis, this work aims at providing a deep analysis of the method he used in the study of myths. The cornerstone of his modus operandi was undoubtedly Comparative Mythology, which he often celebrated in his works and which he directed at the search of a common root for the different mythic tales, following in this regard Friedrich Max Müller, whom he knew directly and befriended. My work analyzes the influence that the popular German orientalist's theories had on the thought of the Italian scholar. Even though aligning with his teachings (especially as long as the "meteorological" exegesis of myths and the so-called "disease of language" are concerned) De Gubernatis didn't omit to highlight some of Müller's limits. In the end, in order to clarify De Gubernatis' proceedings in the study of myths, examples taken from his works are often referred to and analyzed in their structure and in the intuitions at their base. Some of these are very interesting because they concentrate on some issues still scarcely considered at that time, especially in Italy. |
