Summary: | This article considers the Christian theology of creation and its relevance for hermeneutics. What might appear at first sight to be unrelated fields are shown to have significant connections in philosophy and literary theory. With special reference to the philosopher James K.A. Smith and the theologian Colin Gunton, this article seeks to explore a theological understanding of the human interpretative situation as an aspect of creation. It proposes that certain core principles of the Christian theology of creation may provide a framework for a coherent model of hermeneutics that encompasses both the possibilities and limitations of human language. |
