Summary: | Three works of Volney (1757-1820) exemplify three constructions of religion. "Voyage en Syrie et en Egypte" (1787) presents Islam as a nefarious institution that buttresses the military despotism of the Turks. In "Les Ruines" (1791), all peoples are gathered in a world assembly and the religious leaders put up obstacles to the spread of natural morality. "Tableau du climat et du sol des États-Unis" (1803) opens new perspectives: thanks to conversations with an Indian chief, Volney sees religion as a part of native culture, and the understandimg of religion becomes necessary to the understanding of the fate of the defeated tribes |
