| Summary: | The topic of djihad, effort, is anchored in the semantic repertoire of the Muslim Brotherhood since its founding era. In the beginning of the 21st century, it is still very much used in the circles ideologically close to the movement in Europe. If its uses are sometimes very diverse or even divergent, it does concern especially fighting against one's own bad inclinations and the effort for preaching. Indeed, there is still an uncertainty related to the reach of this djihad and also concerning the legitimacy of suicide terrorism, particularly when noticed that there is compassion or even sympathy for human bombs, especially in Palestine. But, in itself, the use of the qualifying term "martyrdom" is related to diverse realities: it is also ascribed to a suffering nation or group of people but also to exemplary personalities from whom one should be inspired. And beyond these categories of effort and martyrdom, new discourses are emerging, that include the intermediary theme of sacrifice, in harmony to the Western way of life but also the breakthrough for individuation.
