Nicolas Poussin dies in Rome on November 19, 1665. He asks to be buried with humility and anonymously. This does not prevent those who admire him to try to establish and to transmit the memory of the painter by a grave worthy of his genius and an epitaph. The article seeks to understand the motives for this request which Chateaubriand was finally able to satisfy by a cenotaph in the church of San Lorenzo in Lucina in Rome. |
