| Summary: | The article deals with some papyrus scrolls of the fifth and sixth centuries from Oxyrhynchus, in Middle Egypt, in which Jews appear. In P. Oxy. XLIV, 3203 a Jew rents some rooms in a house of two nuns who are sisters; in the accounts of a great landed estate there are payments from Jews, in particular for the rent of the synagogue; in addition, we have papyrus scrolls using Hebrew letters. The texts show that in late ancient Oxyrhynchus there was an organized Jewish community, which had many daily contacts with the rest of the population, but at the same time maintained a certain degree of separation from the other inhabitants of the city. |
