Description
Summary:The classical tradition concerning the practice, in ancient Sardinia, of eliminating the aged people, has usually been studied just as an element for the explication of the expression "sardanios gelos". Here, on the contrary, this practice has been analysed in itself, from the point of view of the history of religions; so not only the literary tradition, but also comparative parallels have been utilized. As a result, this practice has been recognized as an autonomous rite (ritual killing), pertaining to the indigenous tradition, not, as asserted by some of the classical sources, to the Punic culture. This secondary attribution should be seen as a misunderstanding of the original reports on the practice, or as a mere consequence of the negative conceptions the Hellenic culture had about the Punic one.
