Description
Summary:The medieval question how angels can occupy place in cosmic space has been quoted merely derisively by modern critics of scholasticism. The paper intends to set out the original meaning the apparently odd discussion had for scholastic thinkers in the 13th century. In the angelology of Thomas Aquinas, Bonaventure and John Duns Scotus, its important implications for theology, metaphysics and the philosophy of nature become evident. A comparison of the different answers given by the three authors reveals a far-reaching development concerning the understanding of the relationship between finite spiritual beings and the spatial cosmos that was decisively influenced by the famous Parisian condemnation of 1277.
