Summary: | In the diverse cultural world of Latin America people's religious views have been shaped by both native and imported cosmologies. This article compares the different perspectives on creation theology of the continent's indigenous, Afro-descendant, Jewish and Christian traditions presented at a conference in Salta, Argentina, and makes clear that the universality of salvation implicit in belief in creation is revealed in specific local contexts and constantly displays its links to them. From an ecological standpoint the indigenous spirituality of the Andean region in particular provides resources that can enrich post-colonial Christianity in its desire to work with other cultural and religious traditions in a synergy to protect the earth as the place where we all live. |
