| Summary: | Careful study of three Yiddish booklets leads to the conclusion that they were likely printed by one printer, but almost certainly not in Lublin. The evidence is typographic — fonts of type used, metal ornaments, and woodcuts. The booklets are typographically inconsistent with other books printed in Lublin but fully consistent with a group of books that bear dates from 1620 to 1631 and either omit or falsify the place of printing, as seems to be the case with the three books studied here. Some bibliographers have attributed some of these books to Hanau, but I prefer "Hanau(?)" for the whole group, including the three titles now disassociated from Lublin, until more typographic or documentary evidence provides the basis for a firmer resolution of the question than is now possible. |
