The story of Rav and the herders constructs rabbinic expertise on the interface of two dialogical spheres, only one of which is engaged by the oven story: first, relationships among Rabbis, and second, relationships between Rabbis and other professional groups. The last part of the essay moves beyond the story of Rav and the herders to survey, and tentatively classify, interactions among Rabbis and professionals in the Bavli. | ||
