Description
Summary:There are allusions in the letter published here that tend to reinforce the opinion I previously expressed in a number of articles regarding Elḥanan as ra'is al-yahud, appointed by the Fatimid authorities.1 The allusions are not substantial, are ambiguous, and in themselves are not definitive proof. However, when added to the materials already found regarding Elḥanan himself and other figures I suggest were Heads of the Jews, the picture becomes somewhat clearer. Of course it would be desirable to uncover unambiguous evidence in the Geniza, such as a writ of appointment for one of these persons, or even a clear reference to them as ra'is al-yahud (which occurs only once in connection with Shemaria b. Elḥanan). However, these are the current findings. Furthermore, one sees indications in the letter that might strengthen our knowledge of the condition of the community after al-Hakim's decrees and the death of Shemaria b. Elḥanan, as well as our knowledge of Elḥanan and his status in the Jewish world. The document also adds details regarding the writer, ʿEli b. ʿAmram. These details will be elaborated in a future essay dedicated to ʿEli b. ʿAmram.
