Description
Summary:Individual liberty, and particularly that kind of liberty that is rooted in subjective consciousness, is conceived nowadays in a more and more strongly anti-religious perspective. In other words, the freedom of conscience and freedom of religion are becoming two alternative dimensions, even conflicting, of individual liberty, instead of being conceived as overlapping to each other. In this article I try to show that the freedom of religion and freedom of conscience are the same, and that they are two inseparable dimensions of subjective freedom. In addition, I try to show that every limitation of the first is necessarily a limitation of the second. Finally, I argue that freedom of conscience must be protected as a dimension of personal dignity, but not in a purely individual perspective. Personal dignity and subjective conscience are rooted in a relational context that represents their horizon of intelligibility. So, if everyone builds his own consciousness within a relational horizon, such horizon has to be taken into account in assessing whether there are dangers and obstacles to the free expression of consciousness.
