Description
Summary:Two statements by Saint Augustine have influenced William Desmonds work throughout his career. The first describes the double movement of the road Augustine himself traveled: Ab exterioribus ad interiora, ab inferioribus ad superiora – from the exterior to the interior, from the lower to the higher. The second statement describes God as interior intimo meo et superior summum meum – more interior to me than my most intimate intimacy and higher than my highest peak. In this article, the author starts by outlining how modern philosophy has often spurned the company of the religious in its project of autonomy. In this line of reasoning, it keeps returning to itself whenever it engages with the thing outside itself. Using Saint Augustine, William Desmond shows there can be a different kind of inward turn. This is a turn to the self that involves being with God. It could mean a passage through hell, but this passage can be a catharsis and a purification that makes us receptive to the higher.
