| Summary: | This article examines discussions on the reddit.com forum r/atheism in comparison with rhetoric found in contemporary atheist organizations and among leading figures within the atheist movement. We demonstrate how the culture of r/atheism converges with that of formal atheist cultures, most importantly regarding understandings of rationality and how religious people deviate from it, while highlighting areas of tension regarding how to relate to religion and religious people. We conclude that the social experience of community and belonging appears to be as important as other more instrumental goals commonly adopted by secular activists, and that tensions regarding the practice of atheism and the purpose of the forum correspond to tensions found in formal institutional contexts. We thus argue that while r/atheism is not directly or explicitly affiliated with atheist activism, overlap in the nature of discussion and debates is sufficient to consider the forum another window into the development of a general atheist culture practiced in institutional contexts and at the everyday level of 'lived' atheism. Cet article analyse les discussions sur le forum reddit.com r/atheism en comparaison avec la rhétorique tant des organisations athées contemporaines que des figures de proues du mouvement athée. Nous démontrons comment la culture du r/atheism converge avec les cultures formelles athées, et ce, surtout, concernant la compréhension de la rationalité et la manière dont personnes religieuses s'en écartent, tout en mettant l'accent sur les points de tension concernant les relations à la religion et aux personnes religieuses. Nous concluons en observant que l'expérience sociale de communauté et d'appartenance apparait comme étant aussi importante que d'autres objectifs instrumentaux communément adoptés par les activistes laïcs. Par ailleurs, nous observons que les tensions concernant les pratiques de l'athéisme et les objectifs du forum correspondent aux tensions trouvées dans des contextes institutionnels formels. Nous soutenons ainsi qu'alors que le r/atheism n'est pas directement ou explicitement affilié à l'activisme athée, le chevauchement dans la nature des discussions et des débats est suffisant pour considérer ce forum en tant que fenêtre de développement d'une culture générale athée, mise en pratique dans les contextes institutionnels et dans le quotidien de l'athéisme « vécu ». |
