Description
Summary:The article traces the economic development of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church since the Liberation of Bulgaria (1878) to nowadays. Special attention is paid to the church's economic activities and status between the two World Wars. This archive-based overview offers fruitful grounds for comparison with the changes in church economy under communism, as well as with the post-1989 restoration of the economic potential of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church after the collapse of this totalitarian regime. The article also outlines the major sources of church revenues and the key avenues of their spending during the modern Bulgarian state. Considering economic growth as a guarantee for its institutional autonomy in its relations with the state, the church has always tried to rationalize and modernize its economic activities and thereby keep its societal influence intact.
