| Summary: | Religious organizations are far more likely to follow than to lead local community values because they are painfully vulnerable as organizations. They are dependent on members' favor for attendance, manpower, and financial support, whereas members participate largely for instrumental return. Clergy are likely to be predisposed to be passive and to be rewarded professionally largely for keeping their congregations satisfied. The national hierarchy has little basis for influencing the locally entrenched congregations. |
