Description
This study focuses on some aspects of a funerary military inscription from Apamea in Syria. The deceased, Verinius Marinus, was a librarius in the office of the legate of legio II Parthica, which set up its winter quarters in Apamea on several occasions. The issues are: the date of the monument, the presence or absence of imperial epithets in the honorific titles of the legion, the mention of a legatus at the head of the legion while II Parthica was normally commanded by a prefect, and the identity of the deceased and his brother, who erected the monument. A military inscription from Lyon introduces Marinus’ entire family: his father, a veteran from legio XXX Ulpia Victrix, his mother, a former slave, who became his father’s wife, and two brothers —one of them was known from the monument in Apamea— and a sister. From the probable date of the Apamea inscription, 232/3, an approximate date can be deduced for the Lyon monument: the beginning of Severus Alexander’s reign (between 222 and 228).
