Description
Although relatively few inscriptions mentioning a date have been found on the modern-day site of the ancient city of Edessa and its surroundings, they do allow us to study the complexity of dating systems in the Ancient Middle East. We know that the Seleucid Era was widely used as a dating system in the region from the Hellenistic Period. But during the Roman rule over Edessa and Osrhoena, during the 2nd and 3rd cent., several inscriptions and handwritten documents attest that a local era have been used as a dating system. Thus, the present article seeks to demonstrate the use of the “liberation era” as a dating system in Edessa, which began in 213 ad. Until now, scholars have dated third-century inscriptions found in and around Edessa whose dates comprise only two digits according to the Seleucid era dating system. Rubens Duval’s intuition was that the digits referring to the hundreds had been omitted from these inscriptions. The authors of the present article however refute Duval’s interpretation, by showing that the Edessean inscriptions do not confirm the previous intuition. We should therefore review the dating of several inscriptions and handwritten documents from Edessa and its region.
