| Summary: | The purpose of this study was to explore the associations between self-discrepancies and positive and negative religious coping in a sample of students at a small, explicitly Christian college (N= 190). Actual: ought and actual: ideal discrepancies were explored in areas of spiritual functioning as seen in relating to God (e.g., loving God, prayer life, showing fruit of the Spirit) and as seen in relating to others (e.g., social outreach, compassion, active in ministry). Discrepancies in spirituality as seen in relating to God were consistently associated with positive and negative religious coping. Similar processes existed for actual: ideal discrepancy and religious coping and for actual: ought discrepancy and religious coping. Finally, self-discrepancy added uniquely to the explanation of positive and negative religious coping even after controlling for other variables from the personal, situational, and social domains of the individual's orienting system. |
