Description
Summary:AbstractIvan Aguéli is known not only as an artist but also as Sweden's first (famous) convert to Islam and as an initiate in the Sufi order Shadhiliyya-Arabiyya. Sufism's role in Aguéli's life and its significance for his theory of art and style of painting have been analyzed primarily by Viveca Wessel (1988). This article will instead analyze Aguéli's relationship to the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), which extends far back in his life, and how they influenced Aguéli's philosophy of religion and view of art.
