Description
Summary:This paper aims to compare Julien Sorel and Captain Ahab, the main characters of two Nineteenth Century novels, The Red and The Black and Moby-Dick, using the term devotion [Hingabe] as analysis criterion, which is of crucial importance for both fijigures. For both Sorel and Ahab there exists a signifcant discrepancy between their respective personal circumstances and the aims to which they are devoting their actions and fijinally their lives – namely social uplift in the first case, and revenge on the White Whale for incurred suffferings as well as longing for insight into the world’s real conditions in the second. This leads, at least regarding the dimension of actions, to very closely related endeavours in solving this discrepancy. Thus it becomes possible to understand these two novels not primarily as exponents of two specifijic National literatures, but rather as two ideal-typical examples regarding the actions of certain social groups in certain historical and social situations.
