Dolphin deified: the celestial dolphin, an Upaniṣadic puzzle, and Viṣṇu’s first incarnation

This paper argues that early in the Indian tradition the dolphin was deified and elevated to heaven as a constellation that housed the old polestar Thuban in its tail.
