| Résumé: | American mainstream film from the 1950s to the present has advanced a barrage of countercultural heroes that bears witness to the shattering of traditional cultural assumptions and to the emergence of new values that help define popular culture. By examining the nature of the countercultural journey across a variety of genres I hope to show how the cinematic quest to define the characteristics of the new hero mirrors growing perspectives regarding race, gender, sanity, spirituality, and environmental relations. |
