| Summary: | This article outlines a prevalent critique of faith-based religious education and attempt to address it. The critique emerges from the culturally hegemonic tradition of contemporary liberalism and alleges the incompatibility of faith-based religious education with the development of students’ capacity for critical reasoning. This particular claim is used as part of a wider argument against the human right of religious parents to choose a religious education for their children. I propose to show that not only can Catholic religious education be compatible with the development of critical reasoning but that it is, in principle, substantially more so than the sort of religious education favoured by contemporary liberalism. In light of this I examine the implications of my thesis for both the human right to educational choice and the future path of Catholic religious education. |
