Summary: | Bernardino Savelli, protonotarius and member of one of the most important Roman baronial families, had a significant career in the Curia, in particular during the pontificates of Sixtus iv and Innocent viii. In the late spring of 1488, he was the Governor of Cesena when Girolamo Riario, Lord of Forlì and Imola and Galeotto Manfredi, Lord of Faenza, were murdered in two different conspiracies. Savelli had to face the political crisis, trying to protect the Pope's interests and not to disappoint his supposed ally Lorenzo de' Medici. Savelli's unpublished correspondence with the Florentine government and with Lorenzo himself gives us an interesting insight of local micro-politics in the wider relational system of the Italian States during the late fifteenth century.
