Il fait aussi état des conditions de la lecture libertine d’une œuvre : la capacité du lecteur à prendre au sérieux l’athéisme comme position et à la considérer comme possible au XVIIe siècle, même si la prudence interdisait de le proclamer. | ||

That’s why, in a response to a former paper, this article seeks to show that La Mothe Le Vayer’s philosophy is incompatible with apologetics, for several reasons: the features of argumentation, the status of reason, and the moral depreciation of religion. It sets out also the sufficient conditions for reading La Mothe Le Vayer’s works in a libertine way: the ability of the reader to take atheism seriously as a position that can really be endorsed in the the 17th century, even if discretion was required. | ||
