| Summary: | Unlike Muslim women in those countries where Islam is the state religion, every Muslim woman of India is the citizen of the secular state. It means that in India secular laws are applied to the relationship between her and the state. Indian Muslim women as well as the women of the predominantly Istamic countries where Islam is not state religion have one point in common: the state authority and the religious authority are not identical. However, the Muslim community of India is strongly exposed to the influence of the dominant culture of India, Hinduism, and in the interrelations between the religious communities, the women's status has its peculiar traits. The specifics of the position of the Muslim women in India compared to that of their Hindu counterparts result from the minority status of Indian Muslims in general. Both parts are citizens of the secular state but their traditions and their personal law are different and have a specific effect on the life of women. |
