Description
Summary:The article deals with the rise and temporal development of the Muslim religious community in Czechoslovakia during the second half of the 30s and the Nazi period after the occupation in 1939. In the first part the author (a research fellow of the Oriental Institut in Prague) describes the poor historical experience of the Czechlands with the Islamic civilization and mentions demographical changes following the Austrian annexation of Bosnia-Hercegovina in 1878. In the second chapter he summarizes and comments a set of documents reflecting the 7 years lasting community's contacts with the Czechoslovak authorities, mainly from the juridical point of view. Two other chapters are devoted to the portrait of M.A. Brikcius, probably the most active leader of Czech Muslims, and an organizational network of the community. The study is based exclusively on primary sources - mainly documents of the State Central Archive in Prague, the Charles Univ. Library, the Library of Oriental Institute and the interview with a recent prominent leader of Czech Muslims.
