| Summary: | Goethe’s interest in Islam and Oriental studies culminated in the composition of the West-östlicher Divan; up to now, though, these influences have been examined as a whole, as part of the wider relationship of Goethe with Islamic culture, without separating religious from cultural components. Starting from the analysis of Goethe’s letters, we will attempt to show an authentically personal re-elaboration of three key terms from the Islamic vocabulary: Islam, Prophet and Hegira. By comparing the letters with his diaries, conversations, and autobiography, we will propose a coherent reading of Goethe’s personal relationship with Islam. L’interesse di Goethe verso l’Islam e gli studi orientali è culminato nella composizione del Divano Occidentale-Orientale; finora, tuttavia, queste influenze sono state esaminate come un tutt’uno derivante dalla cultura islamica, senza separare le tematiche religiose da quelle culturali. Partendo dall’analisi delle lettere di Goethe, tenteremo di mostrare un’elaborazione personale di tre termini chiave del vocabolario islamico: Islam, Profeta ed Egira. Tramite un confronto incrociato delle lettere con i diari, le conversazioni e l’autobiografia, proporremo una lettura coerente della relazione personale di Goethe con l’Islam. |
