Description
Summary:This article deals with the reception of Jewish and Christian apocalyptic literature in the late-antique pagan milieu on the basis of a passage from Apuleius' De deo Socratis. The notion of daemon testis present in this passage has no parallel in the Greco-Roman religious and philosophical traditions, but is well attested in some Jewish and Christian apocalyptic texts, to which Apuleius may have had access during his travels in the Mediterranean world.
