Description
Summary:This paper concurs with Professor Hauerwas' strong misgivings about policies to prevent learning disabilities per se. It explores the link between suffering and having a learning disability, agreeing with the view that suffering is often caused by attitudes within society. It emphasises that there needs to be empathy with the aspirations of people with learning disabilities; that paternalist attitudes are unacceptable and that there needs to be reciprocity in relationships. It argues strongly against viewing people with learning disabilities as a homogeneous group.
