| Summary: | The article deals with two enigmatic and curious finds in the synagogue of Umm el-Qanatir in the Golan Heights, dated to the early Byzantine period: a) A figurative architectural element in secondary use, incorporated in the steps of the portico (facing Jerusalem), as a column base for one of its four columns. This element raises questions as to its artistic/stylistic nature, function and origin. b) A flagstone circle, containing four concentric octagons, located precisely in the centre of the nave of the prayer hall. Since it is unique to date among those ancient synagogues paved with flagstones, an attempt has been made to clarify its function and significance. L’article traite de deux découvertes énigmatiques et curieuses dans la synagogue d’Umm el-Qanatir sur le plateau du Golan, datant du début de la période byzantine: a) Un élément architectural figuratif utilisé en remploi, incorporé dans les marches du portique (face à Jérusalem), comme base de colonne pour l’une de ses quatre colonnes. Cet élément soulève des questions quant à sa nature artistique/stylistique, sa fonction et son origine. b) Un cercle de dalles, contenant quatre octogones concentriques, situé précisément au centre de la nef du lieu de prière. Comme il est unique à ce jour parmi les anciennes synagogues pavées de dalles, une tentative a été faite pour clarifier sa fonction et sa signification. |
