| Summary: | That Buddhism is a European religion, and has been for at least four centuries, is far from obvious. And yet, in Europe – in the geographical sense – a people, the Kalmyks, who profess this religion live here. Being part of Russia since the 17th century, they represent an important component of the mosaic of peoples, languages and religions living in this country. A special process of mutual enrichment has led to the development of a Buddhist culture, in which Russian Orthodox influence can often be discovered. In this sense, the Kalmyks are a true “Eurasian” people. But above all, in the interaction between Orthodox Christians and Muslims in the North Caucasus, they constitute an element that helps to stabilize these relations. |
