| Summary: | Judaism and Christianity have begun a new encounter with each other that aims to reinterpret the very nature and foundation of their relationship. Three broad categories that help frame the conversation between the two communities in such a way that we build upon the progress of the recent past and make possible a truly historic future of partnership together are covenant, pluralism, and tikun olam (the repair of the world). Covenant is central to both Judaism and Christianity in that both faiths teach that the full perfection of the world will not be achieved by Divine unilateral action but, instead, by covenant—the partnership of God and humanity. Pluralism, though widely dismissed as a compromised religious position that breaks down into relativism, is in fact a dynamic affirmation of faith that alone does justice to the dignity of human beings and the variety of ways they have encountered God. And tikun olam—the promise of partnership between Judaism and Christianity for the repair of the world—requires that both faiths put aside their rivalries and make urgent cause with each other to advance the witness of God's love for the world and desire for its healing. |
