Description
Summary:This paper takes into examination a specific ritual of preventive defilement and subsequent re-consecration of the land. It is based on ethnographic material gathe-red through participant observation and interviews in Bucharest in 2015 and 2016. The article recounts the strategies, theories, and practices enacted by a few anti-mosque activists who, in order to thwart the construction of a mosque in the Romanian capital, first spoiled the respective land by burying pieces of pork, and then built a Christian-Orthodox shrine on it, planting crosses and placing icons and Romanian flags.
