Description
Summary:The question of the relationship between religion and media is widely di-scussed among scholars of different disciplines. Applying a hermeneutic approach to the case of Jehovah’s Witnesses, this contribution calls attention to the role of media innovation in the construction of a group’s self-representation. Drawing on the example of Jehovah’s Witnesses’ use of the radio in the 1920s and 1930s and of the Internet since the mid-1990s, it shows in particular how the introduction of a new technology is accompanied by an evolving process of «domestication» that has to take into consi-deration both internal and external constraints on the group. Finally, on the basis of a quantitative survey among Swiss Jehovah’s Witnesses, this contribution underscores the importance of ritualized and performative practices to understand how a new medium is integrated in the life of a religious group and how it shapes its self-image.
