| Summary: | This article contains a brief sketch of the precedents of liberation theology and its constituent elements. The precedents are the Second Vatican Council in its reference to the poverty of many peoples, and the Medellin (Columbia) Episcopal Conference (1968) which concentrated its attention on the poverty of the Latin American continent. Its constituent elements are: a) the biblical rediscovery (Old and New Testament) of the God of the poor and the ensuing commitment to fight poverty with the promotion of a strongly united justice; b) the existential price (martyrdom) paid by many people involved in this struggle (by totalitarian governments) and the Vatican’s misunderstanding. In spite of everything, liberation theology is still alive and operational. |
